Why do I love Project Hail Mary? for me, phm represents everything I love about humans: the inherit desire to help their fellow man (and... fellow alien). While they are kind of forced to do so, under pressure every nation works together to save humanity. It instilled a new hope in me for humanity, and reminded me of the community that surrounds me. I'm just so exhausted of cynical people acting like humans can never do good. Also, grace and rocky are awesome. Favorite character? Gotta be stratt. I'm the #1 stratt defender (Will get into later). Grace is awesome, but Ryan's acting for him made him just a liiiiittle too millenial for me. Rocky makes a very close second, but I have a tendency to choose the more niche character as my fav. phm sins? sin #1: TREATING ROCKY AND GRACE LIKE BABIES HOLY SHIT THEYRE INCREDIBLE ENGINEERS AND SCIENTISTS. can you tell this pisses me off. I am extremely harsh about mischaracterization and the infantilization in this fandom is raaampant. I blame some of this on Ryan's acting--having read the book, I can definitely see that Ryan pushed the "millenial quirkiness" to its very limits. That's not to say I hate his acting--I genuinely believe he was the best choice for this character--but because his acting already pushes the boundaries of who Ryland is, the watered down fanon version of that is even worse. and it PISSES ME OFF!!!!!! While Rocky's infantalization isn't as bad, he definitely gets the "he's just a wittle guy!" treatment. sin #2: demonization of stratt. Istfg media literacy is on the decline bc this is genuinely such an easy trope to understand. What the hell else was she supposed to do?? Stratt had a near divine task forced upon her: save all of humanity within thirty years and oh yeah you also have to make sure all the nations will work together in the process. Her, and only her, was in charge of EVERYTHING. ALL OF IT!! She is genuinely so strong. She even accepted her own fate: being a scapegoat once everything went back to normal. She always knew she'd be a sacrificial lamb!!! But the fate of humanity was more important to her. To be harsh for a moment, Grace was a fucking coward. Now, do I mecessarily blame him for that? No! I'm a coward! But you don't have to go all white knight and "protect" him from his fate. Sorry, but it was necessary. And Stratt knew that.

Oh boy. Oooooh boy. Hot diggity dog. This scene. The shot of carl standing over Grace, face shadowed, blocking the sun from Grace's face so he wouldn't even feel its warmth before being shipped off to space. The fact that it's shot vertically, like we're watching from grace's eyes, it's all just perfect. It's such a devastating scene and I am so SO glad they included carl to really hammer home grace's fate.
